Alice Anastasia CARTE[R]

Alice Anastasia Carte(r)          1797-1866

This 69 year old lady who was buried at Hopetoun Cemetery on 26.01.1866 was the daughter of James Ryan and Margaret Landers.

A death certificate has recently been located. It shows that Alice Anastasia Carte died at Golden Point, Blackwood on 4th February, 1866. The certificate stated her father was James Ryan, a farmer of Bansha, Tipperary, Ireland. Her mother was Margaret Landers. At the time of her death she had lived 12 years in Victoria. She had married James Carte in Tipperary. Four daughters were listed on the death certificate – Mary 30 years old, Fanny deceased, Bridget deceased, and Hanora age 27.

A great great grand-daughter of Alice and James, Helen Foster of Mackay, Qld provided the following information – Alice arrived in Sydney from Tipperary with two daughters, Mary and Hanora, in December, 1853. Her daughters were both married at St Francis, Melbourne. Mary married Patrick Mitchell from Galway. They had five children and moved to Hobart after the birth of their first child in 1858. Hanora married William Boardman. Two known daughters have been located. William Boardman was the informant on the death certificate of Alice Carte. It was noted he was her son-in-law and a mounted constable at Blackwood.

A property in the name of ‘Carte’ in Parwan was shown on the Bacchus Marsh 1877-1878 return.
