Bernard McNeill 1793-1877
Bernard proved a challenge. His death certificate spelt his surname as McNilly. On the tombstone of his sister, Margaret McCluskey, and his brother-in-law, Patrick McCluskey, his name is spelt as McAnaly. Margaret’s death certificate spells her maiden name as Menell and finally her birth certificate gives her surname as McNeill. The ‘Express’ death notice for Bernard confirmed the relationship with Margaret even though the surname had another spelling variation – McNalley. It read, ‘On 26th April, 1877, at the residence of his nephew, Peter McCluskey JP, Rosehill, Pentland Hills, Bernard McNalley, aged 84 years. Funeral will leave Rosehill this Saturday (this day). The friends of Messrs Peter and Thomas McCluskey are respectfully invited to attend.’
