Catherine Callanan 1816-1855
Patrick Callanan 1854-1854
Catherine Callanan was the daughter of Patrick and Mary Ryan. She married Michael Callanan in 1846 at Holycross, Co Tipperary. Michael and Catherine had three known children: Michael born 1848, James born 1851 at Bacchus Marsh and Patrick born in 1854 in Bacchus Marsh. Sadly Patrick died after only fifteen days in February, 1854. Catherine, Patrick’s mother, died nineteen months later. She was laid to rest with her baby son.
Michael Callanan, Catherine’s husband, was the first teacher at the Hopetoun Denominational School which was conducted in the St Laurence O’Toole brick chapel. John Leahy, a fellow Tipperarian, had donated one acre of his land to the Catholic Church to provide an area for a cemetery and a church-school. Michael Callanan resided at ‘Springfield’ until he resigned his situation and joined the Police Force to serve on the gold fields. When Catherine died, Michael was left with four year old James as well as Michael, Mary and Annie who were listed as pupils at the Hopetoun school in 1854. It seems Michael was married again to Anne Bourke in 1855. They had three known children: Jane Callanan born 1856, Catherine Callanan born 1862 and Sarah Callanan born 1864. Michael had returned to Bacchus Marsh and was associated with the Fisken St Catholic School.
