Elizabeth Carter 1854-1862
Eight year old Elizabeth died at Parwan. She was the eldest child of John Carter and Mary Sutherland. John and Mary married about 1853 in Melbourne and had eight children. One son, James Carter, died in 1875, aged eighteen. They also had a William (in some records listed as an unnamed male) who died in 1863. William had a twin, Donald Sutherland Carter born 1863. Burial places for these two boys have not been established. The eldest son, John Whitby Carter married Susannah Muxworthy from a Coimadai family.
John Carter was born in Manchester and his wife was born in Caithness, Scotland. Mary Sutherland came with her sister, Betsy, who had married William McDonald. They arrived in Hobson’s Bay on 29th September, 1852 on the ‘Marco Polo’. One record says they were both of the Presbyterian faith so it is intriguing that Elizabeth is buried at Hopetoun.
