James Ryan was born in Tipperary about 1836. He was the son of John Ryan and Margaret Gleeson. He married Elizabeth Whelan when he was 31. His death certificate said he had lived 50 years in Victoria and was a retired farmer.
Elizabeth, the daughter of Edward Whelan and Margaret Whelan, was born in Waterford and had lived 50 years in Victoria. Elizabeth was the sister of the three Whelan brothers – Stephen, William and Patrick. Elizabeth and James had three children. Her death certificate listed Margaret 46, John deceased and Elizabeth 32. John was born at Darley and died when he was eleven months.
