Mary Dowling (Doolan) 1822-1884
Mary Dowling nee Slattery was born in Tipperary to Daniel Slattery and Ellen Keating. She married Patrick Kennedy in Tipperary about 1840. They migrated and arrived in the colony on the ‘Maitland’ on 9th January, 1850. With them, were their two infant children, John and Ellen and baby Susan who was born on the voyage.
Patrick Kennedy died in hospital in October, 1855. He was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery. Mary was left with six known children.
Mary re-married in 1857 at Bacchus Marsh. Her second marriage was to John Dowling. The name appears in some records as ‘Doolan’. John Dowling was born in Co Westmeath, Ireland to James Doolan (Dowling) and Margaret Egan. Mary and John Dowling had five children all born in Bacchus Marsh: James who died as a seven year old in 1864, Catherine, Michael Dowling who married Minnie Butler, Eliza Jane and Sarah Ann who married Charles Ellis.
Mary Dowling died at Bacchus Marsh in May, 1884 and was buried at Hopetoun Cemetery with her son, James Dowling. In November, 1886, Mary’s second husband, John Dowling died. He was buried at Hopetoun Cemetery. The Dowling headstone at Hopetoun Cemetery also lists Patrick Kennedy, Mary’s son from her first marriage and Mary and John’s youngest daughter, Sarah Ellis.
