James Devereux 1849-1866
Michael Devereux 1854-1874
James and Michael were born in Bacchus Marsh to John Devereux and Mary Crowe who were married at St Francis’ Church, Melbourne in 1846. This was Mary’s second marriage. Her first marriage had been to George Wainright. Mary was born in Tipperary to Patrick Crowe of Templemore and Mary Woods of Rathkea. Both died at Mt Moriac, Victoria.
Mary Devereux had two children to George Wainright and a further five to John Devereux. Mary was left with seven children ranging in age from thirteen years to two years when her second husband died. John died on 30th June, 1856. Two sons of that marriage, James and Michael were 17 and 20 respectively when they died. A third son, Patrick Devereux, died in 1903. An ‘Express’ report at the time stated that Patrick had committed suicide in the same way that his father had done some forty years earlier and on the spot where his father had died and was buried. Patrick was a widower and had, at one time, owned 40 acres of valuable flat land on the Maddingley side of the river.
