Margaret McDermott 1814-1864
Michael McDermott 1863-1864
Margaret McDermott nee Foley was born about 1814 if her age at the time of her death is correct. Other sources suggest she may have been born about 1809 in Cork, Ireland. Margaret married Patrick McDermott. In August 1838, the following people arrived in NSW – Margaret McDermott, age 28, daughter of William Foley, farmer of Cove, Co Cork and Margaret Forest. Margaret was a general servant and was on an assisted passage. With her were Patrick McDermott age five and Michael McDermott age two. Also on the same ship was Patrick McDermott, age 36, farm labourer and son of Patrick McDermott, farmer, and Jane Murtagh. Son Patrick appears to have been born 17.03.1902 at Mullingar, Westmeath, Ireland.
It is not known when the family arrived in Bacchus Marsh. Michael Thomas McDermott, was born in Cobh (Cove), Cork in 1835. This waterside town, once known as Queenstown, has reverted to its old Irish name, Cobh (Cove). It was the departure place for thousands of Irish looking to make a new life. Michael married Mary Therese Brennan at St Augustine’s Church, Keilor in 1856. She was the daughter of Luke Brennan and Margaret Mahoney. Mary is remembered on the Bacchus Marsh Pioneer Women’s Memorial. Michael and Mary had fourteen children one of whom, Michael, died when he was just one year old. He is buried at Hopetoun Cemetery with his grandmother.
