Mortimer McCarthy was born in Co Kerry to Mortimer McCarthy and Ellen Moriarty. He emigrated to Australia in 1858. On 7th November, 1861, Mortimer married Mary Conroy, the daughter of Timothy Conroy and Bridget O’Donohue. Mary was born in Kings Co (Offaly). Mortimer and Mary had twelve children, four of whom pre-deceased their parents. Their one day old baby and their one year old daughter are buried with their parents at Hopetoun Cemetery. Another daughter, Catherine, became a nun, Sister Felicie de Saint Augustin of the Little Sisters of the Poor, and died in France on 12th August, 1896. She was 25.
